ExperienceJohnJohn Durie is, amongst many other things, a conservation building surveyor with a first-class honours degree in building surveying focussing on traditional construction.
"I obtained a Masters degree in the Conservation of Historic Buildings from the University of Bath. My dissertation explored the difficulty owners of old buildings have when trying to obtain the correct information to care for their buildings. After dismissing the traditional route for building surveyors to rotate around numerous building surveying practices in Glasgow, dealing with contract administration and dilapidations, I instead, with the help and support of Pete Ward of Heritage-House, now offers historic/listed/heritage/ or otherise 'old' building surveys via Durie Heritage Building Surveyors. I worked as a building surveyor with the National Trust for Scotland, and administered a multi-million pound Historic Scotland grant funded project through a Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS) in Ayrshire, successfully improving numerous properties using his knowledge of traditional skills and materials. Having retired from a previous career in Strathclyde Police I trained in stained-glass making at RDW Glass in Glasgow, traditional upholstery at J.A. Milton Upholstery in Ellesmere as well as traditional construction through the Society for the Protection of Ancient Building (SPAB) in London, the Scottish Traditional Skills Training Centre in Fyvie and the Scottish Lime Centre Trust (SLCT) in Fife as well as many more seminars and training courses with Historic Scotland and the National Trust for Scotland." |
AlisonAlison Durie has a wealth of experience, having worked in property for more than 30 years, latterly in local authority housing managment.
"After a career culminating in a senior position with the British Red Cross, I obtaining a first class honour degree in building surveying at Trinity St David University in Swansea and a Master Degree in urban and regional development at Cardiff. I have a love of buildings and consider them to be individuals who need understood, just like people. Like people, buildings are often misunderstood so it is important that we provide the owners of these properties with the knowledge to allow them to function as they were designed and intended to do. Although simply constructed, they suffer through their lives and this creates complexities - like humans - which need understood by providing an holistic view." We have an operating base in Perthshire from where Scottish surveys are regularly undertaken.
